STOMP
STOMP is a wordless, percussion-driven theatrical experience created by British artists Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. It premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1991 and opened its landmark New York run at the Orpheum Theatre in the East Village in 1994, earning an Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award for Most Unique Theatre Experience.
Kamal Sinclair joined the company in 1995, during a period of significant expansion that included the resident Orpheum production and two concurrent national touring companies. Over the following years she performed both at the Orpheum and on national and international tours, bringing the show's signature percussive language to audiences across the US and abroad before departing in 2002.
Her seven years with STOMP were formative, immersing her in the discipline of ensemble performance, the power of rhythm as universal communication, and the art of creating visceral theatrical experience without words. It was a remarkable early chapter, and a clear precursor to the multidisciplinary, community-centered artistic philosophy that has defined her creative practice ever since.
